Top Skincare Products for Melanin-Rich Skin, Recommended by Dermatologists

For years, people with skin of color were often overlooked by the beauty industry, many resorting to mixing shades to find a match. This changed in 2017 with the launch of Rihanna’s Fenty Beauty, offering a groundbreaking range of 40 base shades. This “Fenty Effect” pushed other brands to follow suit, expanding their offerings to accommodate more skin tones. Now, this inclusivity is finally extending to skincare.

Historically, people of color have unique dermatological needs. Melanin-rich skin is more prone to dryness, irritation, and hyperpigmentation. Dermatologists like Nada Elbuluk and Neelam Vashi emphasize the importance of products tailored to these needs. Brands are catching up, testing their products on diverse skin tones to ensure effectiveness without causing harm.

For instance, Dior’s Capture Totale Le Sérum was tested on over 600 participants across 110 skin tones, adjusting their formulas accordingly. Sunscreen testing also faces scrutiny as the current FDA requirements may not adequately protect darker skin tones. Brands like Pavise are taking steps to address these gaps by ensuring their products perform well across various skin types.

The movement for inclusivity in beauty is growing, with brands founded by people of color, such as Eadem and Sepia, leading the charge. These brands focus on creating products that cater to the specific needs of darker skin, ensuring that everyone can achieve healthy, radiant skin. As diversity becomes the norm, the beauty industry is set to evolve, embracing a wider range of consumers.
