The reality behind ‘Sephora kids’ dominating TikTok: Young children using numerous skincare products face potential long-term skin allergies.
The ‘get ready with me’ videos on TikTok have become a prominent trend, especially among young users. These videos often feature elaborate skincare routines that can involve using numerous products, which could lead to various skin issues. Researchers from Northwestern University have highlighted potential risks, such as skin irritation and long-term allergies, from these routines.
Data from the study showed children as young as seven were using multiple skincare products daily, sometimes at significant financial costs. Teenagers, on average, spent around $168 on their routines, with some spending much more. The routines, often promising to achieve ‘glassy’ or ‘glowy’ skin, may instead increase the risk of irritation due to the inclusion of many active ingredients.
Many younger users are unaware of these risks, as seen in videos where influencers experience visible skin reactions. Moreover, the content often downplays such reactions, suggesting a lack of understanding about skincare among creators and viewers alike.
The research warns that many routines lack essential elements like sun protection, which is particularly important for children’s skin health. Additionally, the focus on achieving lighter, brighter skin can contribute to reinforcing unrealistic beauty standards.
TikTok responded by noting that this type of content is widespread across media, arguing it can foster self-expression and community, despite the concerns raised by the study.
