We Tested 13 Sunscreens Across 4 Skin Tones: Our Ratings

It’s the summer of skin, and we’re wrapping up Sunscreen Week. We explored the best mineral sunscreens, UV-protection clothing, and the challenges of creating sunscreens without a white cast. Here are some highlights:

  • Krave Beauty’s Beet the Sun: Reformulated to comply with FDA, melts into the skin with no cast, and is Hailey Bieber’s favorite.

  • IT Cosmetics’ Hello Sunshine SPF 50: Feels greasy, good for dry skin but not recommended for oily skin.

  • Neutrogena Clear Face Liquid Lotion SPF 55: Feels oily despite the oil-free claim; takes time to blend.

  • La Roche-Posay Anthelios Melt-In SPF 60: Heavy with a noticeable white cast, though hydrating on lighter skin tones.

  • Vacation Whip SPF 30: Fun to use with a foamy texture, lightly greasy but nourishing.

  • Ultra Violette SPF 50+: Lightweight, hydrating with squalane, perfect under makeup.

  • Youth to the People SPF 60: Velvety with vitamin E and jojoba, great for hydration and travel.

  • Hyper Skin Sun Drops SPF 50: Serum-like texture, hydrating with a glowy finish, but can be too greasy for oily skin.

  • Shiseido Clear Stick SPF 50+: Ideal for reapplication, not overly greasy for a stick sunscreen.

  • Undefined Beauty R&R Elixir SPF 30: Leaves a glass-like finish, although oily—it’s suited for drier days.

  • Good Weather Skin Mineral SPF 30: Zinc-based but virtually no cast on darker skin tones.

  • Tower 28: Feels great but leaves a noticeable white cast on dark skin tones.

  • Supergoop! Unseen SPF 50: Blurring primer-like finish, lacks the glow, provides a smooth base.

Each sunscreen had unique strengths and limitations, catering to different needs and skin types.
