Can Lavender Serve as a Natural Alternative to Synthetic Preservatives in Skincare?
Researchers in a recent study have highlighted the potential of Lavandula angustifolia, commonly known as lavender, as a natural preservative in cosmetic formulations. As EU regulations prompt formulators to avoid certain synthetic ingredients, the combination of lavender hydrosol and essential oil has shown promise in maintaining low microbial contamination in cosmetics.
In tests using oil-in-water emulsions, the formulations with 0.05% hydrosol and 0.05% essential oil maintained microbial counts below 10 CFU/mL after 12 weeks at 25°C and 40°C, which meets the European Pharmacopoeia’s standards. This formulation was notably more effective than unpreserved controls.
The combination demonstrated significant antimicrobial activity, reducing populations of pathogens like Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, and Candida albicans to under 10 CFU/mL. The findings suggest a synergistic effect, enhancing efficacy beyond that of the hydrosol alone.
The study underscores lavender’s potential as a natural alternative for preserving cosmetic products while complying with evolving safety regulations.
