Exploring AFRODERM: The Tattoo Convention Spotlighting Black Skin

AFRODERM Tattoo Convention: Celebrating Melanated Skin in London

AFRODERM, the pioneering tattoo convention focusing solely on melanated skin, is making its debut in London after two successful editions in Paris. Founded by tattoo artist Dimitri Andrew in 2024, AFRODERM aims to enhance the quality of tattoo art on Black skin and educate about sacred African tattoo traditions, often erased by post-colonial modernisation.

London-based artist Itonisha Rowe has curated this edition, strategically scheduled ahead of the Notting Hill Carnival to coincide with the celebration of Blackness. The event will occur on August 22–23 at the Sang Bleu studio.

Featuring 15 skilled tattoo artists such as Jade Clark (Manchester), Marcus Oliveira (Brazil), Emmanuel Item (Vienna), and Zipporah Hunt (South London), this convention highlights artists adept at working with Black skin. The event aims to welcome over 500 guests from diverse backgrounds.

Exhibitions and Highlights:

  • Scarification Exhibition: Showcasing the practice’s roots in sub-Saharan Africa, featuring artefacts and tools.
  • Pop-up Shop: Selling work by participating artists.

Challenges with Melanated Skin:
Tattooing melanated skin presents unique challenges like scarring and ink discolouration. AFRODERM strives to educate artists about proper techniques, emphasizing Black skin expertise.

Cultural Empowerment:
AFRODERM seeks to fill cultural gaps, educating attendees on African mythologies and tattoo traditions often overshadowed by others. According to Maxime Plescia-Büchi, founder of Sang Bleu studio, it emphasizes the real depth and diversity within the tattoo industry.

Building Community:
For artists like Ayobami Samuel (Sammy), AFRODERM is about recognizing and celebrating Black artists, creating spaces to shine without seeking mainstream validation. It focuses on community building alongside creativity and education.

Continued Education:
Dimitri Andrew aims to correct industry errors by spreading knowledge about Black skin needs through conventions and his Parisian studio, which trains apprentices and hosts visiting artists globally.

Event Details:

  • Sponsored by Art Comes First and Stories and Ink Skincare.
  • Tickets are available here.

In essence, AFRODERM is a celebration and exploration of Black tattoo culture, aiming to provide education, recognition, and community for those who have historically been underrepresented in the industry.
