A Guide to Using Gua Sha for Skin Care

Gua sha is an ancient Chinese practice that involves using a small, flat tool to gently massage the skin. Known for its ability to enhance circulation, relax muscles, and improve blood flow, gua sha can help sculpt and tone the skin, offering both physical and mental benefits. There are different types of gua sha tools designed for various parts of the face and body, including heart, moon, and rectangular shapes, with some having special features for specific areas such as the eyes. These tools are typically made from materials like rose quartz, jade, or obsidian, each believed to offer unique healing properties.

To perform gua sha, start with clean skin, applying toner if used, and ensure both your hands and the tool are clean. Use facial oil or a suitable lotion to help the tool glide smoothly. Hold the tool at a 30 to 45-degree angle and gently scrape the skin upwards following lymphatic flow, repeating each movement three to five times. Focus on different areas like the jawline, forehead, cheeks, undereye, brows, lips, and neck. After completing the routine, massage any excess product into the skin or remove it with a damp cloth, and finish with your skincare regimen. Lastly, clean your gua sha tool with warm water and a gentle cleanser before storing it.
