Dermatologists give their approval to the TikTok beauty trend known as skin cycling.
Skin cycling is gaining popularity in the skincare community as a strategic approach to using skincare products. Coined by dermatologist Dr. Whitney Bowe, the technique emphasizes incorporating “rest days” into one’s skincare routine to allow the skin to repair itself. This approach addresses issues that arise from over-layering products, which can lead to irritation and damage to the skin barrier.
Skin cycling typically involves a four-day routine: one night for exfoliation, one night for applying retinoids, followed by two nights of recovery to focus on hydration and skin barrier repair. This cycle can be adjusted according to skin type and individual responses to the products.
The method is especially beneficial for individuals with sensitive skin, allowing them to enjoy the benefits of retinoids and exfoliants without causing irritation. It acts as a reminder that a balanced and thoughtful routine often results in healthier skin, as opposed to over-layering products.
