Is 4chan Down? What We Know Amid Hack Reports

The 4chan website is not loading for many users, according to Downdetector, amid unconfirmed reports on social media of a hack against the internet message board.

Hundreds of 4chan users have reported problems as of early Tuesday morning.

Why It Matters

The outage and rumors of a breach arrive at a time when tech platforms are increasingly targeted for their data or content moderation practices. If confirmed, the release of moderator data or staff emails could expose internal practices at one of the internet’s most opaque communities.

Due to 4chan’s history of fringe political activity and controversial user content, any breach involving moderator identities or communication may pose significant risks both for those individuals and for the broader online safety ecosystem.

What To Know

A post on Reddit claimed a hacker had gained access to internal emails from 4chan staff and was releasing private communications, although these claims could not be independently verified by Newsweek. On X, formerly Twitter, users suggested that volunteer moderators, referred to on the site as “Janitors,” may have had their credentials and chat logs exposed.

Leaked data—if authentic—would expose both internal conversations and potential vulnerabilities in the site’s oversight mechanisms.

4chan did not immediately respond to a request for comment via email.

4chan is a forum board online, founded in 2003 by then-15-year-old Christopher Poole. Although it started as a website to share anime and manga discussions among fandoms, it spiraled into a site which is now seen by many as “a breeding ground for the far right.”

The site’s politics page /pol/ is its most used page, and hosts far-right memes and jargon which are frequently deleted by moderators.

The website’s first mainstream controversy was “Gamergate” in 2014, when men and boys on the site proliferated misogynistic messages and smear campaigns against women in video gaming spaces. Gamergate is seen as an early sign of how boys become radicalized by the far-right online.

Gamergate spawned the website 8Chan, which is not run by the same group as 4Chan. 8Chan has been used to stream mass shootings in Christchurch, New Zealand, and El Paso, Texas.

Poole left 4chan in 2015, citing legal and financial pressures, particularly after the site was linked to the distribution of nude photographs of several actresses which were stolen from their iCloud accounts. He sold the site to Hiroyuki Nishimura. Nishimura used to run 4Chan’s competitor, 2channel.

What People Are Saying

The website “isitdownrightnow” has stated: “If 4chan.org is down for us too there is nothing you can do except waiting. Probably the server is overloaded, down or unreachable because of a network problem, outage or a website maintenance is in progress.”

What Happens Next

4chan is still down at this time. It is unclear at this moment what impact the reported hack will have on the future of the site, and the personal safety of its janitors.
