Experts Discuss the Effectiveness of TikTok’s Viral ‘Caveman Method’ Skin Care Routine | Natasha May

The “caveman method” is a recent viral skincare trend that involves avoiding all skincare products and even water, allowing the skin to supposedly heal itself. TikTok creator Tia Zakher popularized this trend by sharing videos of her flaky skin, attributing it to the method. However, experts, like dermatologist Associate Prof Deshan Sebaratnam, advise against it. They emphasize that our skin is constantly regenerating, and without cleansing, dead skin cells can accumulate, potentially leading to conditions like terra firma-forme. Additionally, unwashed skin might foster bacterial growth due to accumulated sebum.

Experts recommend a basic skincare routine: applying sunscreen in the morning and using a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser at night. Excessive or harsh products can interfere with the skin’s natural barrier and cause irritation. While moisturizers are not essential for everyone, they can be beneficial for people with specific skin conditions like eczema. Overall, skincare should be intentional, focusing on individual goals and needs rather than following trends.
