Almost 50% of UK consumers skip daily SPF application

The “365 Days of SPF” report, commissioned by beauty retailer Face the Future, reveals that 45% of UK consumers do not apply SPF daily. This report, based on an independent YouGov survey conducted in January 2025, aims to educate the public on the importance of daily SPF use. It found that more consumers prioritize moisturizer (32%) over sunscreen (23%) in their skincare routines. Additionally, only 55% are aware that UVA rays are the leading cause of premature skin aging, with a mere 20% strongly agreeing.

The report suggests the popularity of multifunctional skincare products, which incorporate SPF, as they encourage daily use if the SPF is at least 30 and broad-spectrum. Affordability is a primary concern for consumers, with 56% seeking cost-effective sun protection products and 70% advocating for the removal of taxes on such products. Other desired product features include formula consistency, anti-aging, and anti-pigmentation benefits.

SKin cancer remains the top reason for SPF use, but other benefits include protection against hyperpigmentation, sunspots, fine lines, wrinkles, accelerated collagen depletion, and maintaining an even skin tone. Furthermore, the report highlights that most people learn about SPF from friends and family, rather than brands or medical professionals, indicating the influence of personal networks in sun care education.
