Beauty on Fire: The Impact of TikTok Skin Trends on Young Girls

The study highlights some concerning trends regarding teen skincare routines influenced by TikTok. Teens, particularly girls aged 7 to 18, are using an average of six different skincare products, with potential risks including skin irritation and allergies due to multiple active ingredients, such as hydroxy acids. The financial burden is also noteworthy, with monthly skincare costs averaging $168, and in some cases exceeding $500.

Only 26% of these routines include sunscreen, despite its importance in skin protection, especially for younger individuals. Videos often promote lighter skin tones, potentially conveying harmful beauty standards. Additionally, these practices may contribute to a problematic focus on appearance and consumerism.

The study, conducted by Northwestern Medicine and funded by the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases, emphasizes the need for awareness and guidance in teen skincare practices. This includes understanding the algorithmic challenges parents and pediatricians face in monitoring content consumed by youths.
