245 people have applied for political donation certificates ahead of the 2025 general election, said Singapore’s election department on Apr. 20.

This means there could be as many prospective candidates lined up to contest the 97 seats in Parliament come May. 3, as the political donation certificate is a requirement to stand as a candidate in an election in Singapore.

Could have as many as 245 candidates in GE 2025

The Elections Department Singapore (ELD) said that when the application window closed on Apr. 19, it had received 245 applications for the political donation certificate.

Candidates are required by law to submit a form with the details of political donations received, and a declaration that these are from permissible sources.

Candidates will then have to submit a political donation certificate issued by the Registrar of Political Donations, along with their nomination papers and other documents on Nomination Day.

Although the number of political donation certificate applications can give a rough gauge of the number of prospective candidates, parties could also be applying for additional or standby certificates in case their prospective first choices back out.

For GE 2020, there were 226 applications for political donation certificates, but only 192 candidates submitted nomination papers to contest 93 seats in Parliament, The Straits Times reported.

As of Apr. 19, four days before Nomination Day, 124 candidates have filed their nomination papers for GE 2025.

79 applications received for GRC minority candidates

ELD has also received 42 applications for the certificate of the Malay community committee, and 37 applications for the certificate of the Indian and other minority communities committee.

These certificates are required on Nomination Day for minority candidates looking to stand in a GRC.

Each team looking to contest in a GRC must have at least one candidate belonging to either the Malay community, or the Indian and other minority communities.

The requirements for each GRC were designated by President Tharman Shanmugaratnam ahead of GE 2024.
