It’s Not a Whitehead, It’s Milia—Here’s How to Address It
Milia are tiny cysts that appear as small, pale bumps under the skin, often mistaken for whiteheads. Unlike whiteheads, which result from clogged pores full of sebum and bacteria, milia are firm, keratin-filled cysts that don’t get inflamed or respond to acne treatments. They form because dead skin cells and keratin get trapped under the skin surface, usually around the eyes and cheeks where the skin is thinner.
Common triggers include the use of occlusive or very hydrating products, which can disrupt natural exfoliation. Ingredients like petroleum jelly, mineral oils, lanolin, and thick natural butters or oils may contribute to their formation. Proper exfoliation and avoiding heavy creams in hot climates can help manage milia.
