A 42-year-old man sustained a gunshot wound after entering a forested area closed to the public.

The Singapore Police Force (SPF) was alerted by the National University Hospital on Jun. 15 at 11.55pm that a man had sustained a gunshot wound.

The bullet slug was lodged in the man’s left lower back, and the injury was not life-threatening.

The man is currently in a stable condition after surgery to remove the bullet slug.

According to SPF, the man was cycling with his friends in a forested area of the Central Catchment Nature Reserve between Upper Seletar Reservoir and Upper Peirce Reservoir at around 11.40 am on Jun. 15.

After the incident, the man was brought to the hospital by his friends

Preliminary investigations found that SAF conducted live-firing activity at Nee Soon Range during the incident.

The particular area is not open to the public, and there is signage warning against unauthorised entry.

Investigations by the police and the SAF are still ongoing, and the police do not suspect foul play at this point.

MINDEF statement

A Ministry of Defence (Mindef) spokesperson shared that Mindef and SAF are aware of the incident involving a member of public who sought medical attention at NUH for an injury caused by a bullet slug.

The spokesperson added that the incident occurred within a forested area of the Central Catchment Nature Reserve between Upper Seletar and Upper Peirce reservoirs, a restricted area gazetted for SAF live-firing.

Based on preliminary investigation, an authorised live-firing activity was being conducted by SAF at its Nee Soon 500m Range, about 2.3km away from the specific area.

“The SAF is working closely with the Police and other relevant authorities to further investigate the circumstances of the incident. As a precautionary measure, live-firing activities at the Nee Soon 500m Range have been suspended.”

The Mindef spokesperson added that under the Military Manoeuvres Act, unauthorised persons are not allowed to enter gazetted areas designated for SAF live-firing in consideration of their own safety.
