New Initiative Seeks to Chronicle Global Skin Care Issues

In a recent presentation at the Society for Investigative Dermatology meeting in San Diego, Dr. Esther Freeman highlighted global disparities in access to dermatologic care. In many regions, patients struggle with inadequate resources—Burundi lacks sunscreen, while in the DRC, basic moisturizers are unaffordable. Australia exhibits uneven dermatologist distribution, with rural areas underserved.

Freeman, leading the Skin Observatory Study, aims to document these inequities and devise solutions. Initial findings show severe shortages of dermatologic resources, particularly in low-income areas. The study, involving 147 countries, emphasizes limited access to advanced treatments like biologics and sunscreen.

Freeman discussed GLODERM’s efforts, emphasizing local empowerment and leadership development to address these challenges. She encouraged global collaboration and highlighted a pending World Health Organization resolution to prioritize skin diseases as a public health issue, marking a significant advocacy milestone.
