Northwestern Research Reveals Harmful Effects of TikTok Skincare Routines
The study, published on June 9 in the American Academy of Pediatrics journal, highlights that TikTok videos promoting certain skincare routines may increase the risk of lifelong skin allergies in teenagers. Northwestern Medicine dermatologist Molly Hales noted that girls aged 7 to 18 are using an average of six products, often mixing multiple active ingredients, leading to high irritation risks. Some content creators demonstrated using up to 10 products in a brief time, skipping essentials like sunscreen. The regimens often promote “lighter, brighter skin,” potentially amplifying unattainable beauty standards. The study also found these routines cost about $168 monthly. Tara Lagu, a Northwestern professor, pointed out the association with consumerism and the challenge for parents to track their children’s content on TikTok due to the platform’s algorithm.
