Researchers discover first-ever connection between skin microbiome and mental health

A new study published in the British Journal of Dermatology highlights a potential link between the skin’s microbiome and mental wellbeing. Researchers found that the presence of Cutibacterium, a common skin bacterium, is associated with lower stress and improved mood. Conducted by Unilever, the University of Liverpool’s Microbiome Innovation Centre, and their Brain & Behaviour Lab, this research supports the concept of a "skin-brain axis," similar to the well-known gut-brain axis.

The study involved 53 participants who provided skin samples from various body areas and reported on their psychological wellbeing. Results suggested that a higher abundance of Cutibacterium correlates with enhanced mental health, indicating that the skin microbiome may play a role in psychological wellbeing.

The findings emphasize the need for further investigation into the “skin-brain axis” and support the growing interest in neurocosmetics—products that not only improve skin function but also influence mood and emotions. This area of study aligns with consumer interest in products that enhance both physical appearance and mental health.
