Unilever Closes Down Ren: A Sustainable Skincare Brand

Unilever is closing its brand, Ren Clean Skincare, due to internal and external challenges. Despite no fixed closure date, the brand is expected to shut down by the end of the third quarter. Unilever had been reviewing Ren’s future since March and decided to close it after failing to find a buyer.

Ren Skincare, acquired by Unilever in 2015, was known for its commitment to clean skincare and sustainability, achieving zero-waste packaging by 2021. However, the competitive nature of the natural and clean beauty sector impacted its long-term success.

Unilever is shifting focus to its core “power brands” that generate over 1 billion euros annually and is undergoing a cost-cutting drive, having already sold several noncore brands. The company’s strategic focus is increasingly on its premium and innovative product lines amidst global economic uncertainties.
