Dermatologist Warns of Skin Cancer Risk Linked to Popular Beauty Trend

Dr. Emma Wedgeworth, a dermatologist, warns against the use of tanning beds due to their potential to cause skin damage over time and increase the risk of skin cancer. She highlighted that excessive sun exposure and the use of tanning beds, which emit UV radiation, are significant contributors to melanoma skin cancer. Factors such as having light skin, red or blonde hair, blue or green eyes, a large number of freckles or moles, and a family history of skin cancer can increase this risk.

Dr. Wedgeworth advises against using tanning beds altogether and emphasizes careful sun exposure. The Sunbed Association, however, notes that modern salons follow strict safety regulations. Those who choose to use tanning beds should check a salon’s safety protocols.

Signs of melanoma include new moles or changes in existing ones, especially in sun-exposed areas, moles with uneven borders or colors, larger moles, and those that bleed or itch. The NHS advises regular skin checks for any unusual changes.
