Wolves fans would have happily settled for a final-day ‘dead rubber’ when they were languishing in the relegation zone in late January, but their campaign had petered out in recent weeks after an excellent run between February and April.

Successive defeats by Manchester City, Brighton and Crystal Palace had halted their momentum under Pereira, and they looked in danger of slipping to a fourth straight loss when Mbeumo put the visitors in front.

Wolves delivered one of their worst defensive displays of the season in a 5-3 defeat at the Gtech Community Stadium in October, and it was another poor mistake at the back that gifted the Bees the lead here.

Ait-Nouri turned into traffic after collecting Cunha’s pass deep inside his own half and, after Wissa’s shot was deflected into the path of Norgaard, the Dane kept his composure to pick out Mbeumo to score.

“Since the City game, we’ve committed some mistakes that are not usual,” Pereira told BBC Match of the Day. “Sometimes it looks like we’re not focused in those moments.”

Keeper Flekken was kept busy at the other end as the hosts managed 18 attempts, but Brentford appeared to be holding on relatively comfortably until Larsen’s header sent Munetsi racing clear.

Rather than collecting the Norwegian striker’s flick-on in his stride and advancing into the penalty area, Munetsi opted to hit the ball first-time, leaving Flekken grasping at thin air as the ball sailed into the roof of the net.

Boss Pereira has become a popular figure since replacing Gary O’Neil in December, but the Portuguese faces a big summer to improve his squad, with Cunha – who has been linked with Manchester United – and Nelson Semedo two first-team players likely to leave the club.

Club captain Semedo in particular was given a warm reception by the Molineux faithful as Pereira’s squad took part in a lap of appreciation after full-time.
