Alexander Bublik reveals what he promised his coach after Wimbledon last year when he was close to quitting tennis
Alexander Bublik is the Halle Open champion for the second time in his career, after defeating Daniil Medvedev in straight sets.
Bublik, who before the match trailed 6-0 in the head-to-head with Medvedev, earned his first win over the Russian, winning 6-3, 7-6.
The 28-year-old secured his fifth tour-level title and will now move to 30 in the ATP rankings, meaning he will be seeded for Wimbledon.
It’s been an impressive run in Halle from Bublik, who knocked out Jannik Sinner in the second round.
He is back to playing his best tennis after months of struggling on the tour, which he spoke about in his post-match interview.

What Alexander Bublik promised his coach after Wimbledon last year
Following his triumph, Bublik said: “It’s tough to speak. I had such tough months from last Wimbledon till this summer.
“I was close to calling it quits after Wimbledon because I was not enjoying it anymore.
“I promised my coach that I will stay there, that I will keep practicing, and after Wimbledon, we will make a decision if I need to take a couple of months off before trying to come back.
“And now this is happening. Quarters at the French, winner here. I have no words.
“From the mental point of view that’s the toughest match I have ever played in my life. I have never beat Daniil. He’s a super tough player to play especially with my game style.
“Today, everything clicked, mentally and physically. That’s one of the wins of my career, and I’m really humbled to stay here and enjoy the moment.

Alexander Bublik’s return to form
Bublik had spent the majority of the 2025 season crashing out in the early rounds of tournaments, with his best run pre-Roland Garros being a round of 16 finish at the Madrid Open.
In recent weeks, however, he has been playing some of the best tennis of his career.
At the French Open, Bublik earned wins over Alex de Minaur and fifth seed Jack Draper to advance to the quarter-finals of the tournament, where he ultimately bowed out to Sinner.
He got his revenge over the Italian in Halle, though, defeating the three-time Grand Slam champion over three sets en route to the title.
Bublik will now set his sights on the Wimbledon championships, where, with his red-hot grass-court form, he could prove to be a problem for the rest of the draw.
