Data Shows Skin-Care Spending Takes the Lead

In challenging economic times, people often choose to preserve certain luxuries, with skincare emerging as a significant priority. The notion of the “lipstick index” from 2001 highlighted increased beauty product sales during a recession, but it’s clear that today, skincare has become more essential than luxury for consumers.

According to NewBeauty’s “State of Aesthetics Summer 2025” report, respondents are willing to reduce spending on dining and clothing rather than sacrifice skincare and hair care routines. National telehealth dermatologist Anna Chacon, MD, notes that many people now view skincare as indispensable, opting for dermatologist-recommended products like retinoids and barrier-repair moisturizers.

This preference extends to in-office treatments, where consumers prioritize long-lasting value over short-term indulgences. Omaha dermatologist Joel Schlessinger, MD, explains that unlike dining out, investing in skincare offers durable satisfaction. Monroe dermatologist Janine Hopkins, MD, adds that in today’s visual culture, healthy skin is seen as a social asset.

Overall, the data affirms a long-standing observation: even during financial strain, beauty and skincare investments remain a priority for many, offering lasting benefits and enhancing self-perception both personally and professionally.
