TGA Responds to CHOICE’s Sunscreen Examination

The fallout from CHOICE’s sunscreen testing has led to significant actions from Ultra Violette and the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA). CHOICE’s testing in June found that 16 out of 20 sunscreens failed their SPF claims, prompting Ultra Violette to remove their Lean Screen product. The TGA has now advised consumers to find alternatives for 21 sunscreen products identified as sharing the same base formulation.

Preliminary testing shows that this formulation might have an SPF as low as 4. This issue highlights concerns over the reliability of SPF testing by Princeton Consumer Research Corp, the lab that originally tested these products. CHOICE and the TGA are urging better regulation and testing of sunscreens in Australia. Affected consumers are encouraged to seek alternative products and are eligible for refunds and vouchers.
