I Simplified My Skincare from 6 Steps to 2 in a Month and Gained Important Insights
Sometimes, less really is more. For instance, I was washing my face three times a day, not knowing I was stripping my face of the natural oils it needs to stay hydrated. I decided to cut my routine down to a single cleanse and bring that minimalist approach into the rest of my skin-care routine. Instead of six steps, I tried just two for an entire month to see the difference.
### The Experiment
I consulted with esthetician Tiara Willis and dermatologist Aegean Chan, MD, to see what products my skin could live without. Dr. Chan insists sunscreen is essential, likening it to brushing your teeth. However, I set out with only two steps: cleansing and a moisturizer with SPF.
### My Previous Routine
My old routine was a six-step process: a gentle cleanse, toner, correcting cream, and sunscreen in the morning, plus a healing ointment at night and exfoliating weekly.
### Minimalist Transformation
I cut out the toner and healing ointment. Both experts agreed my minimal routine wouldn’t offer the same hydration, but it wouldn’t be catastrophic.
### Observations
In the first week, my routine was just right in Hawaii’s humid climate. But back in dry Los Angeles, my skin felt tight and less hydrated. Over time, I developed some pimples likely due to the lack of moisture.
### Conclusion
The minimalist approach left my skin less dewy and tight, reaffirming that while less can be more, balance is crucial. A simplified routine should still cover cleansing, SPF, and a night cream, with additional products for specific concerns if needed. Listen to your skin to find what truly works.
